It's all part of the training for the emerging stars at the British Youth Opera to put on a bit of a show and their annual operas are a great chance to see the next big thing while enjoying a night of jolly good drama and singing. Never scared of a challenge, the company, now in its 22nd year, is bringing two wildly different but colourful operas to the Peacock Theatre. The mini-season opens with Puccini's 'La Rondine', which paints a romanticised picture of bohemian Paris until the theatrical pursuit of love for two couples is given a sharp comic edge as reality comes crashing in. Running alongside this is Jonathan Dove's modern opera 'Flight', set once again in Paris but this time at the decidedly unromantic location of Charles de Gaulle Airport. It's a far call from Puccini's charming lyrical music but the pulsating rhythms accompanying the narrative of a refugee living at the airport, based on a true story, promises to be full of high energy drama.
